Placed in splendid isolation high on the Schilthorn,
Mürren is a
favourite with many.
The skiing, if you limit yourself to this side of the valley, is
adequate, and the scenery is truly "picture postcard" stuff.
On a clear, sunny day one feels close enough
to reach
out and touch the Eiger, the Mönch
and the Jungfrau, which
are in reality across
the Lauterbrunnen valley, a heck of a long
ways away as the crow flies.
A suggestion would be to take in
these sights from the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, a great
treat for those laid back skiers who delight in a lazy lunch
and a revolving view of the Swiss Alps. You might like to know,
that the "Piz Gloria" was the site of some of the antics
of "double 0 seven" himself.
And no I don't know the
name of the movie or who starred in it. Reachable by train from Lauterbrunnen, Mürren has a loyal following among the English
speaking skiers of Europe.
The skiing is liberally sprinkled
with slopes of all degrees of difficulty, with something for
everyone, from beginners to experts.

Ice sport
The two artificial ice rinks at the Alpine
Sports Center in Mürren are perfect for ice skating. The
top highlight for ice skating fans is the Golden
Snowball Ice Skating Championship, held annually on 29
December. Ice skates and sporting equipment may be
hired from Stäger Sport, opposite the Alpine Sports
Center.
Tobogganing
A
Cool "Hot Tip" - Tobogganing!
Tobogganing, as seen here on the fantastic forest run
from Sulwald to Isenfluh, has a long tradition in the
area. The familiar wooden toboggans are still often used
as a means of transport on snow covered village streets
and paths and the well known "Grindelwald" model is of
course made in the village. Tobogganing remains a great
favourite with all age groups, local people and guests
alike. Toboggans and bobs can be hired at local sports
shops and night-time tobogganing is organized by the
local Ski School. Don't miss the exciting annual
toboggan race Sulwald - Isenfluh, held in February.
Winter walking
The villages of Wengen, Mürren, Lauterbrunnen,
Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh all belong to a
sunny winter walking wonderland, with well maintained
trails through stunning Alpine scenery. Winter-walk to
impressive vantage points or to the inviting terrace of
a mountain hotel. Even fanatical skiers should leave
their skis behind for once and discover the delights of
one of the beautiful winter walking paths!
Snow-Shoe-Trekking
A
delightfully different way to explore Mürren's wonderful

Discover snowshoe trekking - guided treks on traditional

Ski touring
Looking for kilometres of perfect powder snow runs
amidst an unspoilt eternal glacier world? Take a trip
into the high-Alpine world with one of our qualified
mountain guides. Experienced skiers can make easy one
day tours on touring skis and climbing skins e.g., to
the Hundshorn (2928m), Sulegg (2412m), or over the
mighty Aletsch Glacier - at 24 km, the longest
ice-stream in Europe - to Riederalp in Valais. Jungfrau
Railways offer fantastic high-Alpine guided ski tours,
from the Jungfraujoch over the Lötschenlücke Pass to
Blatten. Or make a two day tour to the Äbeni Flue
(3905m) or the Finstaarhorn (4273m) with overnight
accommodation in an Alpine mountain hut.
These, together with many other high-Alpine ski tours
and heli-skiing are organized by all local Ski &
Snowboarding Schools, Lauterbrunnen Mountain Guides
Association, Wengen Mountain Guide Agency, Air- Glaciers
(Lauterbrunnen Heliport) and Scenic Air (Interlaken).
Cross-country skiing
Alpine topography is not naturally blessed with many
areas suitable for Nordic cross-country skiing. But
cross-country skiers are well catered for in the lovely
Lauterbrunnen Valley. The 12 km Lauterbrunnen -
Stechelberg piste glides along the banks of the Weisse
Lütschine River into the far end of the valley, catering
for both classic and skating styles. In Blumental, high
above Mürren, you'll find the sunny 2 km Mürren -Sonnenberg
run. The annual "Inferno Cross-Country Ski Race" takes
place in Lauterbrunnen in January.
Ski races for guests
Become a downhill racer! Take part in the ski races for
guests or take a Swiss ski test! Mürren holds ski races
for guests at the Gimmeln and Engetal/Birg ski lifts.

Climbing & Mountain Guides
The Jungfrau Region has a long tradition as a mountain climbing center
and the summit of the Jungfrau was reached as early as 1811.
The mountain guides of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen have rightly gained
a legendary reputation, as have their many spectacularly courageous
rescue attempts. Mountaineers will really be on a high! Famous peaks
over 4000 metres high, e.g. the Jungfrau and Mönch and tempting peaks of
over 3000 metres e.g. the Breithorn, Tshingelhorn and Gspaltenhorn issue
their icy challenge! The notorious Eiger (3970m) is, of course, a mighty
magnet and experienced climbers can scale the summit along the
Mittellegi Ridge.
-
For information on the various
climbing routes and to arrange the services of a mountain guide,
contact the Tourist Information Center and the Mountain Guides
Associations.
-
Technical equipment can be hired
from local sports shops.
Tours &
Mountain huts
Explore this amazing area, safely roped to an expert professional
mountain guide! Spend the night in a cosy mountain hut, high in the
Alps! (unroped)!
Many different tours, varying in length and difficulty are offered
by the Mountain Guide Associations or organized by Tourist
Information Centers. Local mountain guides and Jungfrau Railways
both offer two day glacier hikes from the Jungfraujoch over the
Aletsch Glacier to Kühboden (Fiesch), with overnight accommodation
in the Konkordia hut (2850m).
A few of the easier guided routes do not require mountain experience
and are suitable for family tours, but you must be in top condition!
For example: the two day Petersgrat Glacier hike (3200m), spending
the night in the Mutthorn hut (2901m).

Alpine dairy
The fresh morning milk and milk from the previous evening - stored
in a cool place overnight - are heated together in a cauldron ...
and so begins the production of all aromatic local cheeses which
appear fresh on the table at the end of the Alpine summer. At the
various traditional autumn Cheese Distribution Festivals, the
mountain cheeses are shared between the local farmers, with some
offered for sale. Cheese-makers will be pleased to demonstrate their
craft. Will they reveal some of the secrets of traditional
cheese-making?

Historical
Culture Walks
... The blushing Jungfrau, a black mirror and Goethe's
"Spirit Song ...
... A historical culture walk around Lauterbrunnen, in the footsteps of
great painters, literary giants and philosophers. In the 18th century,
no self-respecting traveler could afford to miss a visit to Lauterbrunnen.
The village, with the cascading Staubach
Falls and stunning view of the Jungfrau, was one of the undisputed
highlights of the "Classic Tour " of Switzerland. On our guided walk,
you can find out why this was so, and which sights drew the European
aristocracy, famous artists and such celebrated authors as Goethe and
Lord Byron to the valley. Texts and illustrations presented before a
breathtaking natural backdrop! Experience Lauter- brunnen in a
completely new and novel way. Discover fascinating facts. Why does
Byron's hero Manfred want to throw himself from the cliffs of the
Jungfrau?
What mystery surrounds this most feminine
of mountains? (Jungfrau means maiden). Why should you look at the
Staubach Falls in a black mirror?
And who is milkmaid Mimili in love with? And what is the connection
between the Lauterbrunnen Valley and a picture gallery? And ...

Information Center.
